So what makes working at Sparkrock so great?
First off, we have a pretty spectacular looking office, with real trees growing out from exposed concrete, lots
of natural light and plants, whiteboard walls for collaborating and SparkrockTV on screens keeping everyone in the loop to office events, the month's birthdays, employee WOWs and much more.
We also have a focus on wellness, because a healthy workforce is a productive one! This means we have an office gym, Power Yoga classes every Wednesday at noon, weekly organic fruit delivery, Salad Thursdays where Sparkrock provides the lettuce and everyone brings toppings to share (There's also garlic bread...but wellness is about balance right?) and we even have a dedicated fitness and wellness expert that keeps us all on track.
Sparkrock also released this year the new Culture Code which consists of 9 statements created by employees. Sparkrock have spent the last year thinking about what it means to work at their organization. What personality traits do they look for in employees? How do they work with each other? What do they value most? They thought about what statements were used around the office, and how they explain their jobs to our friends and family. These conversationsled to the new Culture Code.
Lastly, we for sure know how to have fun. With tons of social activities like 3on3 Basketball tournamanents, Chili Cookoffs, bowling, Quarterly Potlucks, Jays Games, Ping Pong Tournaments, Axe Throwing there's no shortage of post-work activites for employees to take part in. We also have an amazing annual Holiday Party, Kids Party and Summer Social for employees and their families, and once a year we party it up with all our customers at our annual conference. How many people can say they've had a kangaroo in their office?
One of my personal favourite things at Sparkrock is how we recognize achievement. Every year we award 3 prizes, the Culture Award, the Innovation Award and the "Bucket List Award of Excellence". The first two awards include a half ounce of Pure Gold as a prize and the last award for the top employee of the year includes cash and extra vacation days in order for you to check someone off your Bucket List! Some of this years Bucket List items include seeing Cirque du Soleil in Vegas, a Cape Breton Island Bike Tour and even visiting a childhood friend in the middle of nowhere in Russia, and one lucky winner will be getting to cross it off.
"I want to thank all our employees for the hard work they do for our Clients and for each other," says Sparkrock President, Colin Dickinson. "You know that Corporate Culture is a key focus for us at Sparkrock and underlies everything we do here for 8-10-12 hours a day. That being said, our vision is a little different: Corporate Culture is not about what’s written on a plaque on your wall. It’s about what’s demonstrated in the hundreds of decisions made by your colleagues every day. There’s an expression that has motivated me for years: “character is what you do when no one is watching”. All the hundreds of unseen efforts you make on behalf of Sparkrock – and most importantly on behalf of our Clients – are truly the defining feature of our Corporate Culture – our Character, if you will – and that should make us all very proud of this recognition."
The 2017 Best Workplaces in Canada list is compiled by Great Place to Work® Institute Canada. The competition process is based on two criteria: two-thirds of the total score comes from confidential employee survey results; the remaining one-third of the score comes from an in-depth review of the organization’s culture, including an evaluation of HR policies and procedures. This offers a rigorous representation of the organization from an employee perspective, and an overall portrait of the workplace culture. Together, they provide crucial data relative to the five trust-building dimensions of a great place to work®: credibility, respect, fairness, pride, and camaraderie.
This year’s list received over 400 registrations and over 60,000 employees participated in the 2017 “Best Workplaces in Canada” survey.
